scary google

Weird things happening to the domain storygas.blogspot.com and a google search for storygas tonight.

Have I been hacked? (this post seems to work).
Is it a coincidence that "Google is hit by human error" technical problems today?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7862840.stm

And what would explain this?

UPDATE:-
Apparently, and according to a tweet from eNom
it was a "large Distributed Denial of Service attack"
Beginning at Noon PST on Saturday January 31, 2009, eNom DNS servers were victim to a large Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack

Ahhh.... {blank stare}

Investment Tip for 2009: Branded Video - and Online Comedy - Agency Of Record

Interesting article forwarded (ages ago) over by Emmet @ Element Pictures.

From TVweek.com:-
"It may not be as catchy as Year of the Rat or Year of the Dragon, but I’m declaring 2009 the year of branded Web video.

I’m not just talking about brand integration—i.e., product placement—in a Web series, though I think that category will continue to thrive as online video spending keeps rising next year.

(Remember, eMarketer predicts 45% growth in online video advertising dollars in 2009. Not too shabby, as Adam Sandler says in “The Chanukah Song.”)

I’m specifically talking about videos that are actually created by brands."
MORE HERE:-
http://www.tvweek.com/news/2009/01/column_investment_tip_for_2009.php

One of the shows mentioned in the article is the Adobe-funded show AGENCY OF RECORD
Set against the backdrop of her bosses' taurine-fueled slapfight, one young WTFWorldwide designer battles for relevance amid ridiculous deadlines, apathetic leadership, and ironic hipster fashion.

"AGENCY OF RECORD" EPISODE ONE HERE:-

Great review and interview with the team at Tilzy.tv
Here’s the premise: Dave and Rick are aging creatives (who are nothing like Don Draper). They’re basically your over-the-hill, embarrassing uncles who try way to hard too look like they still hang out with the ambivalently popular crowd at RISD.

They work at an advertising agency called WTF Worldwide, (which is nothing like Sterling Cooper - sorry, my only exposure to ad agencies is through Mad Men), and have a boss that holds virtual meetings in Second Life.

Sierra’s the new girl. She’s your aunt who’s more mature than anyone else in the family (like Peggy!). For the purpose of her career and emotional stability, she tries to set Dave and Rick straight.

Random Lists of Surnames - and random name generator

This is more of a writing resource for myself.

You'll either find the next four columns extremely useful, or a complete waste of screen space.

Either way, they will be permanently linked with all the other WRITING RESOURCES in the sidebar down the right hand side. Suppose they could also work as first names, Christian names, or company names too. Over 1300 below.

Or, for another 300 names, try the 'last name generator' here:

Online Comedy... Nobody's Watching

From wikipedia:-
Nobody's Watching is a television program that was never aired. It originated with and was written by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence, as well as Neil Goldman and Garrett Donovan, writers for Scrubs and Family Guy.

The pilot was developed for the WB Television Network, but network executives passed on the show for the 2005 schedule after test audiences seemed to be confused by its premise. However, in June 2006, the pilot was leaked onto YouTube, and quickly attracted attention from viewers around the world. On July 3, a report in the New York Times suggested that the show could yet make it to a full series, thanks to the positive response from YouTube viewers. During the Friday, July 21, 2006 airing of Last Call with Carson Daly, guests Neil Goldman, Taran Killam, and Paul Campbell called NBC president Kevin Reilly on air, who seemed to confirm a pickup for the series. He later recanted, but a deal was struck to produce webisodes. Webisodes of varying length were released consistently until January 12, 2007.

The Great Internet Video Lie

Interesting blog post here: (from a tweet @capsulefilms)

From the mark cuban weblog:-
Internet Video. Its the salvation for content creators everywhere. Its the end to dependence on the big bad meanies, the cable and satellite companies. Right ? Hell no. The concept that “over the top” video creates a valid business alternative for content creators is as misguided an internet business myth as there is.

For grins, lets say you want to start a business for which you want to stream, live or on demand, any video. Any quality. You want the ability to reach merely 10k simultaneous viewers. Not a big number. In fact , its a tiny number. Its certainly not competitive with any form of traditional TV, but its a starting point. So to stream 10k simultaneous streams, what are your choices ?

Can you just do it from a PC in your dorm room ? From your house on your cable or DSL line ? No. You will need an outside vendor in order to offer a mere 10k simultaneous streams. Which leads to the question of who can provide a service as simple as 10k streams ? Who can do it with any level of reliability ?
MORE HERE:-
http://blogmaverick.com/2009/01/27/the-great-internet-video-lie/

But isn't it the legacy media’s job/ obsession/ 'reason for being' to try to get as many viewers for a single piece of content at time of release - say one million hits - rather than, say, 400 hundred pieces of content each pulling in 2500 hits.

And that’s before you even consider an editorial ability to build a community around that stream of content, and the ability for the audience to comment, post video responses, make content, to contribute to the stream (eg LG15: the show is yours, lg15today.blogspot.com, or even skulladay.com)

Surely the strength of internet content is that it isn’t a one way transmission?

I think I’m thinking, you don’t necessarily need 10,000 people to view a single piece of content simultaneously in order for something to become huge…?

What do you think?

Online Drama... Beyond The Rave

Beyond The Rave Show Site
From beyondtherave.net:-
After more than two decades of absence, Hammer Films returns to horror with Beyond the Rave, an online serial that heralds the resurgence of one of Britain’s best-loved film companies.

Beyond the Rave is produced for Hammer by Pure Grass Films, from an original story by Tom Grass. Producer Ben Grass concludes, “Beyond the Rave was inspired by Tom and my own experiences of raves: the great highs, and the demons that can lurk in the dark before dawn. It's jam packed with great characters and encounters. The narrative hurtles along to a big, juicy conclusion, and all along it's peppered with great tunes and visceral action.”

With the help of his best friend Necro, he spends his last night in the UK tracking down his missing girlfriend Jen, last seen partying with a bizarre group of hardcore night-time ravers led by the mysterious Melech. But as he catches up with Jen at a party, Ed discovers that Melech's crowd, who are hosting the event, are looking for more than a night of fun, and that not everyone will make it through to dawn.

HumToo - Connecting Music Makers and Content Creators

From humtoo.com:-
HUMTOO is a meeting place...
It is a meeting place where communication takes place between music makers and content creators regardless of geography or affiliation.

It is a meeting place that enables music makers to get their music into the hands of content creators quickly and easily and to make money from that music - regardless of where the music maker or the content creator are based. It is a meeting place that enables content creators to find the music they’re after and to forge relationships with music makers from all over the planet.

It is an ever-growing community which is constantly developing new ways to connect music makers and content creators.

HUMTOO makes it only about the music...
HUMTOO is a marketplace where content creators can list their projects that are in need of music. Music makers can then pitch their interpretation of a project and, if successful, earn the fee that the content creator is paying for music for that project...
MORE HERE:-
http://www.humtoo.com

"For Content Creators":-
If you're looking for music, you can create projects from within your profile - specifying the brief, due date, fee and other key information. Then upload your video file of up to 10 minutes in length. Your project can be an ad, a scene from your short or feature film - whatever you have that needs to find a music maker. The market is global - you can create projects based anywhere in the world that will attract music from all over the world and it is FREE to list.

You can view your project any time by returning to the project pitch marketplace. There you will hear new music pitches as they are added. Pitches are sorted by their rating so it is easy to see which music the community reacts well to.

Once the "music pitches due" date has passed view your project to choose a winning pitch. All of the "rate or comment" buttons will have become "select as winner" buttons. Select your favourite music and HUMTOO will automatically put you in touch with the music maker so that they can finish the music for your project.

Storytelling 2.0

From a tweet @clevercelt...

Kathy Hansen poses a great question on her blog:
Does Storytelling 2.0 Mean Open Story Loop?
What other examples of open-loop storytelling are out there?
Is there a downside to this kind of storytelling?
From A Storied Career:-story telling 2.0 story structure in social media
Storytelling used to be a closed loop. As Aristotle said: “A story needs to have a beginning, a middle and an end.” Social storytelling flies in the face of that. It is open-ended. The objective is to tell a story in a way that leaves room for the consumers to fill in the blanks, to add their own tendrils to the main storyline.

Bastholm is primarily talking about branded stories in advertising, but I think this open-loop storytelling particularly applies to the types of storytelling we’re seeing in social media and lifestreaming in which we see ongoing snippets that tell people’s stories. Those stories remain open as long as the folks behind them are alive and telling their stories publicly.

Whoopi Goldberg joins Internet TV revolution

From techradar.com:-
Whoopi Goldberg is moving into online science fiction, agreeing to star and produce in 'Stream' on VOD website FEARnet.

The 53-year-old Oscar-winning actress has come out of retirement to play a part in something that she considers 'the future'.

"I did retire. I hadn't made a movie in quite a while, and I lost my way with the things I was doing. It became entertainment by rote, and there wasn't a lot being done that I was interested in doing," Goldberg told Reuters.

"But the idea that you can be at work and check out a webisode tickles me because that is the future. ...

500,000 Visits for LG15 Today!!!!!

One of the inspirations for starting StoryGas - and still one of the best places to track web series, and follow how communities form around content is
lg15today.blogspot.com

From lg15today.com:-
It is just a little under two years since LG15 Today launched and a few minutes ago the blogspot passed the 500,000 visit landmark with over 797,000 page views.

A long long time ago the 436 had taken away the official chat on the lonelygirl15 web site so a few fans got together to create the LG15 Addicts Userplane chat site. While chilling there the concept of the collaborative valentines card was hatched. It was a huge hit and it became quite apparent that given the opportunity this community had a huge capacity to collaborate creatively using the tools provided by the Internet. It was out of that spirit and the open free philosophy of lonelygirl15 comments that LG15 Today was born as a collaborative blog with the goal of keeping the community up to day with what was going on in the Breeniverse. Whether it be lonelygirl15 news, community videos, a snow ball fight on comments, lonelypirates15, the latest ARG puzzle or any of the other antics that were taking place in the community we wanted to find a way of keeping the community up to date on what was going on.
MORE HERE:-
http://lg15today.blogspot.com/2009/01/500000-visits-for-lg15-today.html

They link to great nuggets like this too - Miles Beckett and Greg Goodfried of EQAL talking about the history and issues surrounding the writing and production lonelygirl15 and KateModern, and how they would describe them as "Social Shows".
(Here below I think talking at the launch of the Polish lonelygirl15 spinoff, n1ckola).

Online Comedy... The Burg

From TheBurg.tv:-
Welcome to Williamsburg, Brooklyn - a once run-down neighborhood now transformed into the hippest corner of New York City. Known as a hub for art, indie rock, and alternative fashion, the 'burg is the world capital of the 'hipster' movement – the young-and-oh-so-chic set who decide what is cool and not cool for an entire generation.

Only in the Burg can a CEO's son cry out against capitalism, while living off his parents' trust fund.

Only in the Burg can an actress nail a callback with an ironic credit card company slogan.

Only in the Burg can you pioneer a hip new neighborhood two blocks away from the old one.

Only in the Burg can a suburban kid strive to be a sitar player on the L train.

And only in the Burg can an unknown writer and director have the audacity to produce an indie sitcom about their ridiculous lives, and then see it become an internet hit.

In late 2005, we decided to do an internet sitcom about Williamsburg.

In early 2006, we wrote, cast and shot a few episodes. We were told we were mad to attempt an episodic series longer than three minutes on the internet. In June 2006 we debuted, and within one week had been mentioned in national blogs and press including the New York Times.
Since then we've posted one season and are soon beginning the second.

Wired article here:-
If your Internet TV diet has been restricted to Rocketboom and Ask a Ninja, you might think the YouTube revolution is being waged by the video equivalent of garage bands, low-budget productions with really crappy equipment. The Burg follows a different model: It’s produced with an actual cast and crew, using high-end digital video equipment. But then, the folks at The Burg aren’t trying to remake TV — they’re trying to break into it.

“It’s like doing an off-Broadway play,” Grace says during a pause in the shooting. “The actors do it because it’s creative and fun, and we give them a lot of flexibility.” And, in a perfect world, exposure to agents and casting directors. Naturally, these bene fits come in lieu of cash. “We pay them in Red Bull,” Grace says.

"The Agency is written by Emmett Scanlan and directed by myself. A lot of other details are up in the air, so I won't announce anything very subject to change."

"On a more personal note, I'm delighted to be working with Scan again, we first worked together on my first film The Rise of The Bricks, and this new piece written by Scan follows the format and sense of humour quite closely, but is far snappier and a lot more exciting!"

RTE STORYLAND Contender - iCabalot

The basic premise is that they will select 10 videos, put them on the RTE website and get viewers to vote for them. If your project gets selected, you get to make another episode, and so on until you get voted out or win.... They shortlisted 20 submissions and we were among the people who got to pitch. Online Comedy... Red vs. Blue

red verses blue
From wikipedia:-
Red vs. Blue: The Blood Gulch Chronicles, often abbreviated as RvB, is a machinima comic science fiction video series created by Rooster Teeth Productions and distributed primarily through the Internet and DVD. The series chronicles the story of two opposing teams of soldiers fighting a civil war in the middle of a desolate box canyon (Blood Gulch), in a parody of first-person shooter (FPS) games, military life, and science fiction films.
Initially intended to be a short series of six to eight episodes, the project quickly and unexpectedly achieved significant popularity following its Internet premiere on April 1, 2003. Rooster Teeth therefore decided to extend the series; the fifth and final season of the original series ended with episode 100, released on June 28, 2007. Two mini-series have been spun off resulting in a new full length series.

RTE Storyland Contender - Caped Crusader

Another candidate from the RTÉ STORYLAND shortlist takes to the Web...

From Caped Crusader home site:-
Welcome Heroes.
Justice has a new name and, though I don’t know what it is yet, I’m taking it to the streets. No more will crime go unpunished. No longer will bullies prevail. No more will fear dominate.

This day a new reign of justice begins. And when I say day, I mean every day like, not just today or any one day in particular. It’s all days, if you know what I mean.

So let it be known that if you seek to cause injustice on my streets, I will be there to stop you – other commitments permitting. And if I don’t stop you, I’ll do my best to find you and punish you. You have been warned.

Remember now…
Justice has a new name!

Augmented Reality On A Mobile Phone and Immersive Video

A couple of glimpses into the future forwarded to me by Sam Michel at Chinwag.com

Click play, let the video load and then click and drag your mouse inside the video screen.

Whilst static 360 degree views have been de rigeur for estate agents and restaurant owners for a while, this is the first example I've seen moving video. Bonkers.

RTE STORYLAND - Erase and Rewind Writer Blog

Good luck to all the (20) writers and production teams pitching to RTE for Storyland this week!

How are you all feeling?

Are there any pitches out there I've not managed to find links for here?:-
http://storygas.blogspot.com/2008/12/rte-storyland-shortlist-announced.html

Here's a link to writer Tina Pisco who's pitching tomorrow -- great post on the opportunities for online narrative...

From Erase and Rewind Blog:-
Back to writing Internet drama:
A single-layered narrative has a beginning, a middle and an ending. This gives you a timeline. It goes from Act 1-Act 2-Act 3. You can jumble them up, like Pulp Fiction, but it still has a timeline, a definite direction.

A multi-layered narrative has other narratives that run parallel to (and are linked to) the main narrative. They can go backwards, or forwards, or sideways. Much as you have a main character in a story and minor characters (whose parallel stories you get to know a bit about), you have a main narrative from which sprout other narratives. The fundamental shape and direction of an Internet narrative is different from any other writing.

Online Comedy... Break A Leg

From breakaleg.tv:-
BREAK A LEG is a independently-made internet sitcom in the vein of Arrested Development and The Office, with a bit of murder thrown in.

BREAK A LEG is the story of DAVID PENN, a writer who just got his first sitcom deal. GROOMMATES, his show about three ex-grooms living with their two ex-wives, replaces the previous hit, SWAMBLERS – a rollicking story of gambling cowboy swingers roughing it in the Wild West, Swambler-style. The writer/creator died – which is good news for David, because now he gets his own show.

Besides the regular trials and tribulations that come with shooting a sitcom, David has one other problem – he’s going to die at the end of the season. How? That remains to be seen. Why? That’s another important piece of information that David has yet to figure out. But as he narrates his story from beginning to end, one fact remains -- he will die, in the storage room, with a gun to his head and the sounds of a fake laugh track in his ears.

BREAK A LEG EPISODES 1-9:-
David Penn has just gotten his sitcom, GROOMMATES, picked up. The problem is he's remembering this from what appears to be a storage room, with what appears to be a gun to his head -- that's being held by what appears to be his would-be killer. It all started here and it all may just end here as well.

Watching the well-produced trailer, and the bonus clip that have so-far been leaked to YouTube, I’d say The Quest for the Golden Hot Dog has all the right elements — hot chicks, wiener eaters, and a veritable who’s who of the LA-indie comedy scene.
