REMIX ISN'T THEFT - hitRECord.org - But is it a webseries?

Came across this web phenomenon, only after a few of years of trying to describe how people can collaborate on a series. It also proposes an answer to the question:
"How do you share 'points' or profits with contributors on works that are still evolving?"

-- They seem to call it The hitRECord Accord.

What is hitRECord?

HITRECORD.ORG is a project (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) started almost five years ago now, and in 2010, we evolved into a professional open collaborative production company. We create and develop art and media collaboratively here on our site. Even this introductory video is the remixed result of a great many contributions. So rather than just exhibiting and admiring each other's work as isolated individuals, we gather here to collectively work on projects together. Videos, writing, photography, music, anything -- we call them all RECords.

Now and then, when I think something we've made has come out especially well, I approach the traditional entertainment industry to turn our work into money-making productions; and then we share any profits with the contributing artists.

Are you RECording?

"Tiny Stories" Announcement

I've found one of the best ways to explain what we do here is just to show some of the "RECords" we've made together. So I've curated this small selection, many of which were recently screened at Sundance and SxSW. Now, the larger purpose of this place isn't merely to post and play the work of isolated individuals, but to collaborate as a community. So if you like what you see, check out our recently Featured RECords and Collaborations to join in and contribute to the next project.

Favourite posts: Dr. Horrible's Sing-A-Long-Blog - Joss Whedon's Online Comedy Musical...

Spending August revisiting some of my favourite posts and web series.

This one isn't a webseries - it was a one-off web event - which, in itself is an interesting take on how to use online release to create a buzz and possibly a community around your project?

Dr Horribles Singalong Blog joss whedon josss weedon joss weedan

From wikipedia:-
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is a 43-minute musical film, initially produced exclusively for Internet distribution. It tells the story of Dr. Horrible, the aspiring supervillain alter ego of Billy; Captain Hammer, his nemesis; and Penny, their mutual love interest.

The movie was written by writer/director Joss Whedon, his brothers Zack Whedon (a television writer) and Jed Whedon (a composer), and Jed's fiancée, actress Maurissa Tancharoen. The writing team penned the musical during the WGA writers' strike. The idea was to create something small and inexpensive, yet professionally done, in a way that would circumvent the issues that were being protested during the strike. On October 31, 2008, Time Magazine named it #15 in Time's Top 50 Inventions of 2008.

So... What's it about, and why is it special?

From NewTeeVee:-
Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, Joss Whedon’s web series, is a bold experiment in online distribution — the series will be available for free for just one week before becoming available on DVD and possibly download — but it’s also damn entertaining.

The tale of an aspiring supervillain told mostly in song, this WGA strike-spurred project treads an odd line between the professional and the amateur, making full use of Whedon’s considerable resources while still carrying a whiff of we-don’t-need-no-stinking-permits filmmaking. The end result is kinetic and inspired, while still bearing the trademark wit and pathos of a Whedon project.

On how to write a hit song... how does it apply to writing a hit web series?

Saw this article by Helienne Lindvall in the Guardian

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/jul/14/how-to-write-a-hit-song

This might be wrong, but a few key sentences leapt out.

"Most people don't realise that, even for successful writers, the good-v-great ratio is low: Guy Chambers (songwriter behind Robbie Williams's best-loved anthems) has written more than 1,000 songs in the last 15 years..."

So that's 1000 songs in 15 years.

= 66 songs per year.

= 5.5 songs per month.

= about 4-6 minutes of polished material per week.

The music writing process is different, but not light years away from writing screenplay.

So maybe we should go a little easier on ourselves about the quantities we generate each week?

"...most writers would agree it's necessary to write non-hits to get to the nuggets. As with athletes, it's important to exercise the writing muscle."

You might also like this set of Ira Glass videos I linked to way back when.

Why FREE works? A Case Study - Sita Sings The Blues

I'm posting this again -- partly because its one of the most useful articles I've watched on the issue of making money from eyeballs vs. scarcity, and mostly because it is one of the articles that has disappeared from the 'search this blog' box at the top of this blog...
(My original post is here...)

Came across this awesome article by Michael Masnick on techdirt:-
"Earlier this year, we wrote about the ridiculous situation that Nina Paley faced in trying to release an amazing film, Sita Sings the Blues.

Basically, some copyright holders of the music used in the film put positively insane terms on the use of their music. This made no sense, considering that the music (from the 1920s) was mostly unlistened to these days -- and the only thing the movie would likely do is increase demand for people to get legitimate versions of the music.

Eventually, Paley worked out a plan to release the film under a Creative Commons license and put in place a business model like the ones we've talked about for years: give away the infinite, sell the scarce.

And apparently, it's working. Pistol points us to a talk that Nina Paley just gave revealing some of the results. You can see the video here (it's a bit over 20 minutes):"

The Free Music Archive: Online production resource

The Free Music Archive offers free downloads under Creative Commons and other licenses.

free music archive free music online music for web producers licencing licensing

From Free Music Archive .org:-
The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads.

The Free Music Archive is being directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet.

Every mp3 you discover on The Free Music Archive is pre-cleared for certain types of uses that would otherwise be prohibited by outdated copyright law.

Are you a podcaster looking for pod-safe audio? A radio or video producer searching for instrumental bed music that won't put your audience to sleep? A remix artist looking for pre-cleared samples? Or are you simply looking for some new sounds to add to your next playlist?

The Free Music Archive is a resource for all that and more, and unlike other websites, all of the audio has been hand-picked by established audio curators.

The Free Music Archive is a platform for collaboration between WFMU and a group of fellow curators, including KEXP, dublab, KBOO, ISSUE Project Room, and CASH Music. The site combines the curatorial approach that these organizations have played for the last few decades, with the community generated approach of many current online music sites.

Inspired by Creative Commons and the open source software movement, the FMA provides a legal and technological framework for curators, artists, and listeners to harness the potential of music sharing.

Every artist page will have a bio and links to the artists’ home page for users to learn more about the music they discover via the Free Music Archive. We also seek to compensate artists directly.

Artist, album and song profiles will contain links to buy the full album from the artist and/or label’s preferred vendor(s). Users can also “tip” an artist if they like what they hear, sending a donation directly to the artists’ PayPal account. Artist profiles include tourdates, encouraging users to step away from the glowing computer screen and see some real live music.

From Verity's Blog:-
It’s been a week since Nigel went missing. No one’s listening and, the louder I shout, the more people think I’m pulling some kind of student prank. The more I think this whole thing’s a joke. Music to write shows by...

When I’m writing, it’s got to be instrumentals. And I think I’ve found the ultimate stream of instrumentals.

The BBC Radio 3 breakfast show on iPlayer.
(Their almost barren home page is here:-)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/breakfast

Three hours long, and a week’s worth on there.

I am totally clueless about classical music, but I love it. And it helps.
As do the spooky photos of the days’ different hosts, Rob Cowan, Martin Handley, & Sarah Mohr-Pietsch.

No ads, no jock schtick, you’re in the hands of pros... for your prose.

Shame you can’t get it out of the UK
-- Do you have any music rituals that keep you going on the keyboard???

Any links to share?

Uploading Audio Files, Podcasts, MP3s, whatever... like youtube

After one final frustrating grapple with odeo.com, had a little hunt around for places where you can upload audio files, podcasts, mp3s, sound effects... whatever... so long as it felt a bit like youtube.

Came across this great blog post. From Geshan's Blog:-
I was in search for websites that let me upload audio files mainly MP3 and embed them to where ever I want with the provided embed code. Similar to the massively popular youtube for video, I was trying to find youtube like sites for audio.
MORE HERE:-

The sites listed in Geshan's post and comments include:-

audioo.com

entertonement.com

yourlisten.com

podbean.com

Went with entertonment.com in the end -- it took about 12 seconds to sign up, and about the same time to upload. And good to see them active in the comments on the original blog post too -

HumToo - Connecting Music Makers and Content Creators

From humtoo.com:-
HUMTOO is a meeting place...
It is a meeting place where communication takes place between music makers and content creators regardless of geography or affiliation.

It is a meeting place that enables music makers to get their music into the hands of content creators quickly and easily and to make money from that music - regardless of where the music maker or the content creator are based. It is a meeting place that enables content creators to find the music they’re after and to forge relationships with music makers from all over the planet.

It is an ever-growing community which is constantly developing new ways to connect music makers and content creators.

HUMTOO makes it only about the music...
HUMTOO is a marketplace where content creators can list their projects that are in need of music. Music makers can then pitch their interpretation of a project and, if successful, earn the fee that the content creator is paying for music for that project...
MORE HERE:-
http://www.humtoo.com

"For Content Creators":-
If you're looking for music, you can create projects from within your profile - specifying the brief, due date, fee and other key information. Then upload your video file of up to 10 minutes in length. Your project can be an ad, a scene from your short or feature film - whatever you have that needs to find a music maker. The market is global - you can create projects based anywhere in the world that will attract music from all over the world and it is FREE to list.

You can view your project any time by returning to the project pitch marketplace. There you will hear new music pitches as they are added. Pitches are sorted by their rating so it is easy to see which music the community reacts well to.

Once the "music pitches due" date has passed view your project to choose a winning pitch. All of the "rate or comment" buttons will have become "select as winner" buttons. Select your favourite music and HUMTOO will automatically put you in touch with the music maker so that they can finish the music for your project.

Sound Mixing Techniques for Online Web Audio

Found this great article on Heather Fenoughty's blog:-
This is what I’ve discovered specifically for mixing sound acceptably for delivery as audio online via website.

I’m working on an online drama. It’s due to launched in January/February if we keep to schedule (touch wood) so watch this space for more details.

As well as video clips, there’s web design, images, blogs, links and flash animation. I’m designing the sites and animation, composing and mixing all the sound for the video, putting together flash animations and scoring those too.
Heather covers: Computer Speakers, Composing with restrictions, Mixing Sound for Media, Sound Mixing for Online Web Audio, and Gain and Compress.

cablog! The Alarms - A Story In Words

From Cablog!:

'The Alarms - A Story In Words'

"The Alarms - A Story In Words' is a mock rock doc with an original approach to storytelling that embraces the world of low budget film making with open arms and shallow pockets. The movie chronicles the life of a fictitious Irish rock band from its birth, through its growing pains, eye opening education and disenchanted maturity into its final resting place in a whole load of money, a whole load of press and a whole load of police."

How the hell do you clear music for online drama or web series?

Any idea how you clear music for an online show.

Leave us a comment by clicking on "comments" below!

If you take an episode of, say, lonelygirl15.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orPEB8oRNwU

They have music running in the episode. On the youtube page, and on the production's show page, the description of the episode contains a link to the music running in it.

Are those links part of the deal with the artist to clear the music?

Suppose if you link to a performer, they'll link from their sites to you too...
Like here...
http://www.myspace.com/hayleytaylor

Which is another way of motivating fans...

The other way to clear music seems to be licencing it "off the shelf"... or... off the webpage.

Some music sites seem to have a direct "licence" or "license" option on their page...

So, like here...
http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/domased-analog/

There is a tab at the top of the page, "licensing"...
If you click on THAT link, it shows you the source, which, rather helpfully has details of how to licence it for *your* production.
http://magnatune.com/info/licensing

Has anyone done this?
If you purchase the licence... does that cover everything?
(is that all you need to do???)

And are there any musicians, bands, labels out there who want to leave a comment below to plug their work (or looking to be linked to, or licence their work to, an online drama?!)
