UK web docusoap - THE SPECIALS - series set in Brighton, UK

More from my inbox -- leave a comment if you want the world to see your show too!

Got this great message from Katy...

Hi Neil

...wanted to get in touch with you now as my series is finally underway! http://www.the-specials.com

Here's some background:
The Specials is a docusoap series following the lives of 5 friends with learning disabilities who live together in Brighton. It's meant to be funny, touching, honest and definitely not worthy. The guys provide the voiceover for the series so the viewer is seeing the world through their eyes.

...It's been doing pretty well so far - we are up to Episode 8 - and we are getting some great comments on our forum & facebook site.

...do yo think you might be willing to give us a mention on Story Gas even though we are a factual series?
Don't usually link to factual shows, but aww... go on then... as it's a UK based show...

Here's a question before the episode though,

Any ideas how these guys can get an even bigger audience?

Online drama web series - NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Got a great email from these guys...

I'll let it speak for itself!

neighbourhood watch web series
Hi Neil-

...I'm contacting you to let you know that our trailer is live and to introduce you to our show. You may recognize Becki Kregoski from lonelygirl15. The primary goal for "Neighborhood Watch at The Hollywood" is innovation.

For better or worse, it will be different. We'll have 3 alternative endings and interactivity. I also will want to try something a little different with the release schedule and exclusivity of content.

Today I'd like to introduce you to an innovative concept in storytelling called "Forced Perspective." Please take a minute (1:10 to be exact) and check out our trailer.

Neighborhood Watch @TheHollywood Web Series Trailer

Watch Who You Trust

Four single women who reside in the same apartment complex experience life and love in today’s world.

The seemingly perfect living arrangements are anything but as unknown to them, not only is every aspect of their lives being monitored and recorded within the complex but other tenants move out with no explanation.

Friendships will be put to the test and lives forever changed as the truth behind the mystery slowly comes to light.

Watch events unfold through the eyes of the security system's mysterious operator.

“Neighborhood Watch at The Hollywood” incorporates an innovative storytelling device called "Forced Perspective." Forced perspective is essentially first person point of view, which is nothing new, however the difference is that the viewer is forced to see the entire story through a character's perspective.

The powerful aspect of Forced Perspective is that the viewer doesn't get to see what they want to see or even what they are used to seeing. There is no hand holding. There are no zoom shots to direct your attention to where clues might be-you're going to have to find them yourself.

Between the Scenes: Neighborhood Watch @TheHollywood

In “Neighborhood Watch at The Hollywood” the viewer is immediately introduced to the control panel of The Hollywood's state of the art security system and it becomes evident that they are watching someone use it to monitor the tenants.

The console is completely functional and the operator has access to not only security cam footage but also video from cams hidden in apartments as well as mobile cams. Only the security system's operator controls what is seen and when and discovering their identity is central to the plot.

Here's THE JUNIOR.

The Junior
A submission from Mercuryboy Inc for RTE's Storyland 2010. It's a satirical look at the ad industry through the eyes of a junior copywriter.

Shane and Joel have been in the industry 11 months and are still desperately trying to make a name for themselves before their first year review. Shane, the copywriter and main character, is neurotic and self-loathing and hates his team mate Joel. The show will monitor Shanes consistent self-sabotage and crumbling personal life.

The Three Faces of You, Online - HOW TO MAKE A HIT INTERNET SHOW #6

Still trying to reconcile what I do online with the different things I do in work.

And I don't think I am alone in this.

(Alone as you can be with 3 personae).

There's the public you.
The corporate site.
The online CV.
The good photo, the good 'sell'.
This is you if you were PR'd by the Soviet news agency TASS in the good old days. Bold images, positive messages.
The best foot forward, but the dullest stream.

There's the friendly you.
Stuff that's only relevant to mates you know, or material you'd want to share with "those who've been there" with you.

Then there's the controversial you.
The dislikes, the tensions, the struggles.
The stuff that's REALLY interesting.
The stuff that really makes you an individual,
but which you're not sure should be for broadcast.

Hugh MacLeod Hugh McCloud Hugh McLeodFelicia DayStephen Fry

Those who've really been successful online have managed to find a line between all three. Or, even, managed to avoid falling into any one of these three.
All of their work is directed into one 'place' on the web, and has a sense of honesty which does not work against them.
Hats off to them, it's a real achievement.

So here's a question,
- can you, or should you, combine all three faces in your online work?

Will 'Online Celebrity' from now on reward those brave enough to present all three faces in their electronic footprint?

I'm wrestling with this because I'm thinking that properly rounded online characters benefit from a combination of the three in what's presented of them to the audience.

Whether it's Bree's youtube posts in lonelygirl15, KateModern's bebo profiles, or Hardy Bucks tweets.
All this material helps the character become more three dimensional.
And the 'voyeurism' is what brings us back for more.

It's more work to upload this extra material, but it's the kind of development work you do as a writer anyway - might mean it doesn't go to waste, and even helps the audience to directly challenge the character when a web show is 'live'...

Online Pitch Competition - Web Series contest

Just seen this site is linking to here -- hello!

From Online Pitch Competition facebook page:-
Got a great idea for a webseries? We want to hear it!

We want stories that cross platforms, cross borders, cross boundaries but hit home. Write what you know. Write what you want to see. Write something new.

We're putting together a slate of online dramas to pitch to broadcasters, brands and social media networks, and we're opening up the field to students and young storytellers. If you’ve got a great idea for an online series that could play on Myspace, Bebo or Facebook, PITCH IT TO US!

The best entries could be further developed under the auspices of Met Film’s BAFTA-winning Russell Stopford and big-hitting online producer Serena Cullen—executive producer of the first show to cross from digital to TV, Bebo series Sofia’s Diary, which aired on Fiver in the UK.

If your pitch is taken forward and commissioned, you'll get a story credit and a producing, directing or writing role in the production.

Remember: we want episodic narratives that work in the busy busy busy environment of the internet. Focus in on the story you want to tell, and the characters you want to explore. Apart from that, there are no limits. Any genre, any style, any perspective—just keep it original!

• Title
• 300 word Synopsis
• Character Bios
• Summaries of 3 webisodes
• 2 page sample script
• Pictures, Drawings or Mood Reel

by December 1st to be considered for the first round of submissions

Online Comedy - ON THE ROCKS

From On The Rocks YouTube Channel:-
On the Rocks is an independently produced original comedy series that follows the comical exploits of the staff at Smith's Jazz Café.

Watch as the staff somehow manages to keep the restaurant in business in the midst of the absurdly amusing chaos and disorder that occurs at the bar on a daily basis.

From waiting on unbearable customers and serving intoxicating drink concoctions, to haphazardly promoting the bar and training incompetent new employees the staff handles each task in a humorously obnoxious way. After taking a shot of this comedy series, viewers will never look at there bartender, waiter, or waitress the same again and learn to live on the rocks.

RE-POST - BIRMINGHAM WEST MIDLANDS WRITER EVENT Hello Digital: 3G-3D Storytelling Saturday 7 November 2009

WRITER?

Looking for something for Saturday?

In Birmingham, West Midlands, UK?

Places still available for a great all day event

3G-3D Storytelling: New Narrative Structures and Writing Opportunities in the Digital Age

on
Saturday 7th November 2009 (10am-5pm)
Birmingham Repertory Theatre, Centenary Suite
£50 (£40 concessions)

Speakers:
TV/film producer: Claire Ingham
Online Drama writer: (COUGH!) Neil Mossey
Screen & Games writer: Graham Joyce

From the traditionally structured TV and film stories that attempt to appeal to wide audiences (which ITV controller Peter Fincham termed ‘3G’ – three generations watching together), to the 3D structures of games and online drama, this day-long course looks at new opportunities offered to writers by the rise of digital technologies.

Suitable for writers, film-makers and drama practitioners interested in looking at new ways of telling stories across screens of all sizes.

Graham Joyce is the author of fourteen novels and has won numerous awards for his writing, including five British Fantasy Awards and the 2003 World Fantasy Award. He has also written screenplays of his novels and has recently been hired by the creators of Doom 4 to help develop the storyline potential of the computer game.

Neil Mossey worked solely in television and radio before writing on Season 2 of the daily interactive web drama KateModern (storylining over 26 weeks, and scripting 74 webisodes). The series ended in July 2008 clocking up 66 million video views, the largest UK online production to date. As a comedy producer at the BBC he was responsible for developing new formats and drama in the Comedy Entertainment department with writers and performers.

Claire Ingham is a producer and film and television script developer. She works on projects at all stages of development - currently ranging from the adaptation treatment of Eoin Colfer’s bestselling novel The Wishlist to the final draft of Helen Cross’ original feature Stratford Road. Claire has previously worked for a number of film and television companies in development roles. She was Head of Drama Development at Impossible Pictures for four years where she headed a small team, commissioning and developing a range of TV and film projects for all the major broadcasters, including Jed Mercurio’s contemporary retelling of Frankenstein and Michael Chaplin’s family film Pickles.

*Concessionary rate also available to early bird bookings received BEFORE Friday 30th October.

For booking and further information,
